Big Picture

So, Ive taken stock of all of my long underwear, hats, gloves, sweaters, and other warm sounding things. I like to trick myself into thinking that all of that fabric will make me comfortable.

I have fielded many questions about the purpose of the research I will be supporting in Churchill. For those of you looking for some more detail you can visit the recently added Arctic Team Landing Page to read more about the project and the scientists working there. You should also visit if you would like to check out the blogs of the teachers I will be working with.

So this upcoming adventure got me thinking about many of the larger concepts that are easily tossed around in daily conversation. It's simply amazing to think that the fact that the fuels we burn and the commutes we make to work impact ecosystems the world over. While that is inherently a "heady" concept - I will hope to bring some simple real world examples of what "Climate Change means" to each of you through this blog. Please comment on my daily posts with your own questions and insights.

That is in fact, what this adventure is all about. How else can we understand or own home, if we do not understand the global ecosystem it depends on?

  1. This adventure sounds awesome Kevin! I hope you are able to view the northern lights...that photo is beautiful. For what length of time will you be outdoors daily before returning to the research center? JLM

  2. To the mysterious JLM

The longest we will be in the field is a full 9 - 5 workday. Depending on conditions and tasks at hand for the day the team may head back to the research station as early at 3:00.

  4. Hey Kev...

I know it's probably too late now but for future reference... I don't know if you know about www.steepandcheap.com. It's a website that every twenty minutes puts a new deal for "outdoorsy" type equipment (and sometimes a few other things are thrown in) all day every day. The deals are AMAZING. Basically everything they put up is 40%-80% off.

A couple days ago I got a new CamelBak for my trip this summer. It's a $70 bag retail and I got it for $23. There's everything from clothing, to bags, to tents, to shoes, to sunglasses. It's all name brand quality stuff too.

The catch is that because the deals are only 20 mins and then its over, it's kind of a forced impulse buy. But to get around that if you see something up there that you might be interested in just add it to your cart, select the size, color, etc. that you want and then click proceede to check-out. Then just leave that webpage open and it's saved until you buy it. That's when you can do your research to see if if's something that you would really want.

Anyway I just thought I would throw that out there. Have fun and don't freeze on you trip!
